The Late Show host Stephen Colbert gave a sad news to the show’s fans who have loved the show for more than three decades.

The 61-year-old revealed to the audience Thursday, July 17 that the long-running series is being cancelled.

“The network will be ending ‘The Late Show’ in May,” the host announced.

He told the viewers that he got the news the previous evening.

Upon hearing the news, the audience booed in disapproval.

The host connecting with the audience quipped, “Yeah, I share your feelings. It isn’t just the end of our show but the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS.”

He also clarified that it’s not like he is being replaced by someone else. Rather the show itself is ending.

The Emmy-winning host had joined the show in September 2015.

Colbert thanked the network, the employees and his viewers of the CBS television network show.

“I’ve had the pleasure and the responsibility of sharing what we do every day in front of this camera for the last 10 years and, let me tell you, it is a fantastic job,” he added. “I wish somebody else was getting it.”

“It’s a job I’m looking forward to doing with this usual gang of idiots for another 10 months,” Colbert told the viewers. “It’s gonna be fun. Y’all ready?”

The last episode of the show will air in May 2026.

As per CBS statement to Variety shared Wednesday, the series’ cancellation is a ‘purely financial decision’.
