James Gunn teased major changes coming to the DC Universe and gave fans a surprising update on one rising hero.
The director confirmed that Blue Beetle would remain part of the new DCU, putting an end to months of questions about the character’s future.
While promoting the second season of Peacemaker in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Gunn explained that not every character needed to be rebooted, as he shared that Blue Beetle, played by Xolo Maridueña, “fits in very nicely” and could be carried forward with only small adjustments, just as Peacemaker was.
The director revealed that although parts of the Blue Beetle film might be slightly altered, both the character and the actor would stay in place.
The approach, he said, allowed the studio to keep strong elements from earlier films without forcing complete retellings of origin stories.
However, his confirmation gave clarity to fans who have been unsure about Blue Beetle’s role following sweeping changes to the DC slate.
The director also highlighted Peacemaker season two, which officially launches inside the new DCU. John Cena returned to his role as the unfiltered vigilante in a story filled with higher stakes, unexpected twists, and emotional depth.
James Gunn served as writer and director for all eight episodes, leading a cast that included Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
