Are You My First Recap: Colton and Kaitlyn Break Down Hulu’s Virgin Show Clutch Fire

The new Hulu dating series Are You My First? has been dubbed “Love Island for virgins,” featuring virgin Mormons, virgin FBoys and even a virgin OnlyFans creator. And in case you missed the fact that the cast is made up of all virgins, hosts and narrators Colton Underwood and Kaitlyn Bristowe are there to remind you with endless puns about popped cherries in voiceovers and games throughout the 10-episode season.

“We probably made one too many,” Kaitlyn, 40, tells Us Weekly about the virgin puns.

Colton, 33, disagrees. “I’m a more is more type of guy,” he says in the joint interview. “if you’re gonna go for it, just go for it. We went for it. Lean in.”

Both the former Bachelor and former Bachelorette confirm that they are “in the joke” — and so is the cast of 21 virgins.

“I’ve already got messages from so many of them being like, ‘I’m obsessed with the voiceovers,’” Kaitlyn explains. “We’re all in on the joke — the cast, the audience, everybody. Are You My First? has such a lighthearted, fun tone to it, while also being serious. They know this is not a mockery. They know that this is about them finding love, but like, let’s also have fun with it, because we’re making a show about virgins.”

Colton Underwood and Kaitlyn Bristowe Break Down the Biggest Moments From Are You My First

Or are they? During the premiere episode, which started streaming on Monday, August 18, Underwood questioned the group about whether they were really virgins.

“I made strong eye contact with people. I mean, obviously, like, the camera cut away to their faces, but I feel like I have a decent gut,” he tells Us.

Kaitlyn isn’t so sure. “There’s no way of telling. I actually, totally, think somebody’s lying,” she says. “I’m a pessimist.”

One thing is clear, the cast includes men and women with different levels of experience and different reasons for not having sex. Religion, and specifically Mormonism, however, is a common theme.

“They’re a little rebellious — or they want to be. They’re curious,” Kaitlyn says of the notion that the Mormons make good reality TV with shows like The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and even Dancing With the Stars featuring a lot of people of the Mormon faith.

“They have some pent up things going on,” Colton adds. “Did you see Mormon as having the highest conversion rate? People are converting to be Mormons to get on these shows.”

Virgins are few and far between in Bachelor Nation. Ashley Iaconetti, Sean Lowe, Colton Underwood and Becca Tilley are just a few of the cast members who famously spoke out on TV about holding onto their V-cards. “I feel like people think I’m less of a man because of that. And that’s the hardest thing […]

All 10 episodes of Are You My First? are currently streaming on Hulu. Keep reading for Colton and Kaitlyn’s behind-the-scenes scoop on the biggest moments from the season:

Mike P.’s Fate

Mike ARE YOU MY FIRST

Kaitlyn and Colton aren’t the only recognizable faces from Bachelor Nation on Are You My First? Mike Planeta, who appeared on Katie Thurston’s season 17 of The Bachelorette, shook things up with his arrival. And while he formed a connection with contestant Carissa, the men opted to send her home — seemingly because they were jealous of the attention the Bachelorette alum received.

“We felt in the moment that was an immature response to a situation that was not in their control,” Colton tells Us. “And that is the whole point of this — to see how they react, their maturity level. The women, I know, voiced that it seemed petty. You sort of see them shake in their boots when he walks up that beach, immediately you see the insecurity, the nervousness of, like, ‘What is walking in here now?’ I like that in a show because it allows the women to see that. And then vice versa, too.”

While Kaitlyn hopes that Mike P. and Carissa could connect outside of the show, there has been no update on any potential romance.

Noah’s Friendzones

Contestant Noah explored connections with Madi, Katya and Brooklyn. While he would come on strong and seem invested, he would then decide they might be better off as friends.

“He’s one of the guys, in my opinion, who was just so scared. Not that it was a game that he was playing, but he was playing scared,” Kaitlyn says. “He did it wrong. I don’t think he was being true to himself. I really don’t. I think he’s afraid.”

Colton adds that he couldn’t let his guard down in front of the cameras. “I think he was in his head,” he says.

FBoy Virgin Godwin

There was a love triangle between Godwin, Deya and Jade (which turned into a rectangle when Ty got involved), and in a particularly cringe moment, Godwin brought up Jade on a date with Deya.

Kaitlyn tells Us that she actually had sympathy for Godwin at that moment — to a point. “I’ve done that before!” she says. “I don’t remember who [on The Bachelorette]. It was early. … There’s nerves, and you are meeting so many different women, but at the same time, like, don’t do that. Godwin does have that aura about him that is kind of like an FBoy, which for a version that’s a very interesting dynamic.”

Colton acknowledges Godwin’s confidence, with Kaitlyn hinting he could be the one lying about being a virgin.

“On his journey, I watched him put his foot in his mouth a few times, and sort of have to backpedal and figure it out and read body language,” Colton says. “He was in the conversation. He was present. I remember the first conversation he had with Jade, where he was talking about, ‘I want my queen to support the king,’ and gender roles. And like, obviously, I think he sensed in that conversation how uncomfortable she was.”

Farha on OnlyFans

Farha ARE YOU MY FIRST

Farha’s arrival sparked an interesting discussion about porn within the virgin community, with the contestant revealing she has an OnlyFans career.

“[I thought it was] chef’s kiss,” Colton tells Us, adding that he’s “very proud of the network” for featuring Farha.

“I think we should embrace it,” Kaitlyn says. “I’m obviously all about supporting people in whatever decision they make in life works for them and Farha is just one of those. She’s making that money, honey.”

Several contestants from The Bachelor and The Bachelorette have confessed juicy details about their time on the ABC dating series in the past — especially when it comes to the overnight dates. Hannah Brown, for her part, made headlines after she revealed she had sex with one of her final four during the fantasy suite […]

“She knew her assignment and she played it well,” Colton adds. “She also stayed true to herself, which I loved.”

Brooklyn and Layne

Despite being one of the last to arrive, Layne was able to form a legit connection with Brooklyn. During the finale, he even asked her to be his girlfriend.

“I feel like they’re Ken and Barbie,” Kaitlyn says. “Both so sweet and so innocent. It was really cute.”

Colton thinks they could be a “perfect match,” adding, “They were two individuals that also really trusted and leaned into the experience, and it worked.”

Jake and Sara

Sara ended things with Jake after an awkward first kiss, his decision to sleep on the couch during their temporary living experience and feeling like he was controlling.

“I just think he was put in a lot of situations that he would never put himself in, and I think that makes people really uncomfortable,” Kaitlyn says. “I don’t know what to make of Jake.”

“Jake would have been better suited and paired with somebody with a little bit more experience too,” Colton suggests. “I think their relationship was always sort of this interesting dynamic, because he had his convictions and what he really believed. As a host and a viewer and a fan of Sara, you were like, ‘I want this magical [moment]. Somebody give her an incredible first kiss.’ I think a lot of the other men, probably, would have understood that assignment better.”

Michael and Rachael

Rachael ARE YOU MY FIRST

Rachael
Disney/Ricky Middlesworth

When Michael made an early exit two days into the show because of a death in the family, Rachael was distraught. He ended up returning to the show, and the pair became the second couple to leave the show together.

“it was really sweet how much she fell for him,” Kaitlyn tells Us. “I think he made her feel really safe.”

Rachael was also candid about her vaginismus diagnosis, something Kaitlyn related to. (The Mayo Clinic defines vaginismus as “involuntary spasms of the muscles of the vaginal wall can make penetration painful.”)

“I’ve spoken about it before — not on a public platform — but my doctor has recommended me to two different physical therapists,” Kaitlyn says. “I have vaginismus. I’m definitely not a virgin, but it’s still a thing for me. … My muscles, they just absolutely seize up when anything comes near to even being around it. For me, it stems from a really traumatic event that happened when I was 16. I think you can have that without having trauma, but something bad happened to me when I was younger and I never processed it.”

Gabby Windey, Colton Underwood and more Bachelor Nation alums are living their most authentic lives after appearing on the franchise. Windey, for her part, revealed in August 2023 that she is dating a woman for the first time. The season 19 Bachelorette, who split from ex-fiancé Erich Schwer in 2022 after a televised proposal, sparked a […]

Kaitlyn says it has “interfered with my relationships because it just takes me a second” and she really has to feel “comfortable” with her partner.

Is ‘Are You My First?’ a ‘Fail’ Because No One Had Sex?

That is the question Colton and Kaitlyn posed in the finale. And when asked again by Us, they stand by their answers.

“The goal of the show was never to get them laid,” Colton says. “I remember joking about that on my Bachelor season like, ‘That is not the goal of the show.’ The goal is to connect with somebody, to experience these things. And people experienced their firsts on Are You My First? in different ways. On a deeper level, I think some of the cast experienced the first self-love and self-acceptance, like, having that deeper understanding of their virginity was the goal of this. And I would like to think after a lot of them have lost their virginity, and they might have had those tools to do that from the experience.”
